This interactive session will explore the complex process of distinguishing between language disorders and language differences in children from low socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds. Participants will learn how cultural and environmental factors influence language development and how these intersect with diagnostic decision-making. Practical, evidence-based strategies will be shared to help speech-language pathologists make accurate, culturally responsive assessments and interventions. Case studies and applied activities will ensure participants leave with tools they can immediately implement in their practice.

Title: Integrating Literacy into Speech Sound Disorders Sessions
Understanding the connection between speech sound disorders and early literacy development is essential for effective intervention. Speech sound disorders can significantly impact a child’s ability to decode (read) and encode (spell), especially when foundational skills like phonological awareness and letter-sound knowledge are not solid. These underlying skills are critical not only for speech and language development, but also for successful reading and writing. By integrating structured literacy, the five pillars of reading, and orthographic mapping into speech therapy, clinicians can bridge the gap between spoken and written language. This approach allows for therapy sessions that address both speech and literacy goals, using evidence-based, adaptable strategies that support success.
